Amit Sharma discusses using Ocumetra’s mEYE® Suite in practice and the impact it has had on both clinical workflow and patient experience
As myopia management becomes a core part of everyday practice, ensuring consistency in both clinical decision-making and patient communication can be challenging, particularly across multiple clinicians and practices. Digital platforms such as Ocumetra’s mEYE® Suite aim to support this by bringing data, education and communication together in one place. Amit Sharma is a senior optometrist and practice partner at Davis Optometrists and DW Roberts Opticians in Sutton Coldfield, UK. We spoke with him about how he uses the platform in practice and the impact it has had on both clinical workflow and patient experience.
Standardising myopia care
Why did you introduce mEYE® Suite into your clinical workflow?
Amit Sharma: Myopia management is a vital part of our profession, and delivering it consistently across multiple clinicians and practices can be challenging. As a partner in a handful of practices, I wanted to ensure that every patient interaction was of a high standard, and that the conversations our clinicians have with patients are consistent, clear and backed by reliable data. mEYE® Suite makes that possible.
By bringing together tools for risk profiling, axial length estimation, and treatment benefit visualisation, mEYE® Suite enables clinicians to communicate complex clinical information in a way that is both logical and easy to understand. This not only supports more confident clinical decision-making but also enhances the clinician’s confidence in how they present recommendations, which can help build trust with patients and their families. In turn, this improves patient understanding and shifts the focus of the consultation towards clearly explaining the benefits of treatment, rather than feeling like you are “selling” it.
Tools for communication
Which elements of mEYE® Suite do you use most during consultations?
Amit Sharma: We use the full suite, and this is reflected in our Myopia Management standard operating procedure (SOP) document that all our clinicians refer to.
In particular, tools such as centile charts and the vision simulator (pictured above) are very helpful for parent communication, while the axial length estimation and analytics allow us to bring in a key clinical metric even in practices without a biometer. The ability to combine these elements into one integrated workflow is what makes it so effective, as it removes the need to switch between multiple tools or explanations. It’s such a well-thought-out and easy-to-use platform that naturally flows with the conversation you are having with patients and their parents or guardians.
Guiding treatment decisions
What factors influence your clinical decision-making and treatment planning most?
Amit Sharma: As with all clinical decision making, it’s about putting the pieces of the jigsaw together: this would include refraction, risk factors, lifestyle and patient preferences. I find that treatment planning would be guided by having those clear, high-quality conversations with your patients and their parents or guardians so that they can make an informed choice.
The element of the suite that I find has the greatest influence on this part of the consultation is the ‘How could myopia management help?’ section (pictured above). It presents treatment benefits in a clear, visual way by providing a graphical representation of myopia progression with treatment vs without, and insights on ocular health and vision risks. This makes it easier to translate clinical data that can sometimes feel abstract into something meaningful for families, so that shared decision making is supported and patients/parents feel confident in choosing a management strategy.
Improving practice consistency
What has been the biggest benefit for your practice since adopting mEYE® Suite?
Amit Sharma: The platform has helped us as a business ensure that there is consistency of care provided to our patients, while having proven data to aid with clinical decision-making. By providing a structured, data-driven framework, the platform ensures that all clinicians are working from the same foundation. It also supports more efficient consultations, with tools designed to simplify explanations and reduce chair time while still delivering comprehensive care. Over time, this has helped improve clinician confidence and streamline workflows across the practice. Most importantly, it has built trust in our patients and parents.
Patient understanding and engagement
How have patients and parents responded to its use in consultations?
Amit Sharma: The feedback has been very positive. One of the key reasons we chose this platform is that it presents information in a patient-friendly way, without overwhelming families.
Features such as the downloadable report via QR code are particularly well received, as they allow parents to revisit the information in their own time and share it with other family members. The way the platform visualises concepts such as eye growth, risk, and treatment impact also helps to reduce anxiety, as it focuses on understanding and management rather than just highlighting potential complications.
Advice for practices
What advice would you give to practices considering mEYE® Suite?
Amit Sharma: If you are aiming to deliver a high and consistent standard of care for your myopia patients, this platform goes a long way to ensuring that! mEYE® Suite provides a comprehensive, integrated approach that supports both the clinical and communication aspects of myopia management. It helps ensure that decisions are data-driven, conversations are clear, and patients feel engaged in the process. For practices looking to build confidence in myopia management or scale it across a team, it is a valuable tool to support that journey.
